L’appel du vide describes a sudden, transitory urge to destroy oneself in a particular moment – be it while standing atop of a cliff or watching a train approach at full speed.
Roughly half of us will hear ‘the call of the void’ in our lifetime.
Though often interpreted as a suicidal impulse, evolutionary psychologists have theorised that this phenomenon is, in fact, our brain’s way of reminding us of our will to live.
To assess a threat, we must first imagine it - spend a moment inside of it, and come to know it in all its horrifying detail. Only then can we appreciate the absence of it.
